CHAPTER SEVEN

BLAST! THERE WASN’T a darn thing left to do—nothing left to fuss and tinker with, nothing left to turn her attention to.

Sophie prowled through the ballroom of one of London’s premier hotels casting a critical eye over the round tables covered in crisp linen, set with sparkling crystal and gleaming cutlery, and topped with pink-and-cream peony centrepieces, which even she had to admit were rather fabulous. Pity the perfection couldn’t ease the burning in her soul.

She glanced at the pink and gold balloon displays that marched down the length of the room between French doors that led out to the paved terrace and wondered what it would be like to feel that light and buoyant. She felt as if someone had dropped a stone weight on her shoulders.

Stop being a drama queen. Stop overreacting.

But no matter how often she told herself that, it did nothing to lessen the weight pressing down on her. If only she could work through this tangle of emotions and—

She slammed to a halt, her thoughts scattering when a familiar figure appeared at the far end of the ballroom.

Will.

She swallowed. For the last three days she’d refused to take his calls or to return them. She’d refused to answer his emails. She’d been strung tight at the thought of seeing him tonight, so it made no sense to feel suddenly...lighter.

She inclined her head towards the one set of French doors that were open. He reached them before she did and stood aside to let her pass first. She did her best not to breathe in the dark, spiced lime scent of him too greedily.

Wordlessly, she selected a bench in the sun. He chose the one opposite in the shade. Crossing her legs, she met his gaze. She saw what she expected to see—what his phone and email messages had been full of—worry, regret, contrition. She hadn’t thought seeing those things would help. But somehow it did.

She saw too what she hadn’t expected to see—anger...and resentment? Or was it frustration?

Whatever it was, it made her heart pound.

He leaned towards her. ‘Are you okay? I’ve been worried sick!’

‘I’m fine.’

‘That’s not what my grandfather has been saying.’

She raised an eyebrow. ‘You’ve been speaking to your grandfather?’

He threw himself backwards and scowled at her. ‘I had to speak to someone. You wouldn’t!’

She shrugged. ‘I didn’t feel like talking to you.’

‘You made that clear.’

He leapt to his feet and paced up and down in front of her, hands clenching and unclenching, spine stiff. She considered patting the bench beside her and then thought the better of it. It might be wise to keep all of that unchecked energy at one remove.

‘I was offended—really offended—at what you implied when we last spoke.’

He stopped pacing to stare at her with hooded eyes. ‘I acted like a jerk. Sophie, I’m sorry. I’ve wanted to apologise ever since it happened.’

‘I know. I’ve listened to your messages...read your emails.’

‘But you wanted me to stew?’

She shrugged. ‘You don’t get to act like a jerk and expect no consequences, Will.
